Understanding Yourself - A Self-Help topic.

INTRODUCTION:

Greetings. Many changes are underway in this new administration. This week, I will take a break from politics and discuss a self-help topic I have received many requests to discuss. Understanding ourselves. Before we can understand others, we must be able to understand ourselves since one could affect the other. How often have you done something and then said, "Why did I do that?" Or, "Why did I say that?" I lost count of how many times that has happened to me. It's perfectly normal. However, there are times when it can play a destructive role in our lives. We can mentally or emotionally hurt others as well as ourselves. At work, with our friends or family, or in our relationships.

Although they may not admit it, few people know themselves. Like most, for years, neither did I. At least not in the sense that I feel is relevant. In this article, I will discuss how we can understand ourselves, avoid the pitfalls of making foolish statements or irrational decisions, and then wonder why afterward.

WHAT IS UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF?:

Although many medical definitions exist for these behaviors, I will put it all in plain and easy-to-understand English. Understanding yourself is a profound and ongoing journey of self-discovery that involves gaining insights into your thoughts, emotions, motivations, behaviors, and personal values. These ideas transcend mere self-awareness. It encompasses a deep comprehension of your identity and the various factors that shape you as a person. As we all navigate the trail of life, understanding oneself can serve as a pivotal foundation for mental well-being, personal growth, and fulfilling relationships. In simple terms, knowing who and what we are and how we think will allow us to understand how we would react in many situations.

Understanding yourself can be broken down into several key areas:

  1. Self-awareness - Self-awareness is the cornerstone of understanding yourself. It involves recognizing your feelings, thoughts, strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and motivations. High self-awareness allows individuals to understand how their emotions affect their behavior and decision-making.

  1. Identity and Core Values - Various elements, including your culture, experiences, beliefs, and relationships, shape your identity. Understanding yourself means delving into who you are at your core. This includes recognizing your fundamental values—what you believe is essential in life, such as integrity, creativity, family, or success. A clear sense of identity and values can guide decision-making and define your life's purpose.

  1. Emotional Intelligence - Understanding yourself involves a significant degree of emotional intelligence. This refers to recognizing and managing your emotions and relating to and empathizing with others. High emotional intelligence contributes to better communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building. Developing this skill allows individuals to navigate social dynamics more effectively.

  1. Behavioral Patterns - Every individual has behavioral patterns. Our past experiences, environment, and personality traits influence these. Understanding yourself means examining these patterns and recognizing any recurring behaviors that may be self-destructive or limiting. By identifying these patterns, you can work towards changing them and developing healthier habits, for example. If you are the type that all gets defensive when someone mentions something to you, that can be the cause of many arguments you get into.

  1. Motivation and Desire - Analyzing what drives you, your passions, ambitions, and even fears, is crucial in your journey of self-understanding—recognizing what motivations you can illuminate the path you want to pursue in life, whether professionally or personally. It leads to informed goal-setting and prioritization, ensuring that your actions align with your desires.

WHY ARE THESE IMPORTANT?:

A profound understanding of ourselves can enhance mental health. When individuals comprehend their emotions and triggers, they are better equipped to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Acknowledging your vulnerabilities and strengths promotes self-compassion and resilience. Understanding yourself also plays a crucial role in developing healthier relationships. It enables improved communication and empathy. Individuals who grasp their emotions are more capable of understanding others. This can lead to deeper connections and more satisfying interpersonal dynamics.

Self-understanding opens the door to personal growth. By assessing our strengths and weaknesses, we can identify areas for self-improvement. Embracing a growth mindset encourages learning, adaptability, and cultivating new skills that enhance one's life experience. Decision-making becomes less overwhelming when one clearly understands one's values and motivations. One can make choices that reflect one's identity, leading to a more authentic and fulfilled life.

HOW DO WE ACCOMPLISH THIS?:

Understanding that we are creatures of habit, we have probably been this way for years. Like any habit, they can be challenging to break and take practice. Regular self-reflection, whether through meditation, journaling, or quiet contemplation, allows for a deeper exploration of your thoughts and feelings. This practice gives you insight into your behavior and emotional responses.

Sometimes, others can see aspects of ourselves that we may overlook. Seeking constructive feedback from trusted friends and family can provide valuable perspectives on how you are perceived and help you identify blind spots. In some more severe instances, professional guidance through therapy can offer a safe space to explore complex feelings, motivations, and behaviors. Therapists can equip you with tools and techniques to foster further self-discovery and emotional regulation.

Taking personality assessments (such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Enneagram) can provide insights into your personality traits and how they manifest in daily life. It can also be a fun and enlightening way to understand your preferences and styles of interacting with the world.

Setting personal goals and regularly reflecting on your progress can help you clarify what truly matters to you. This exercise encourages self-examining your values and desires over time, promoting growth and adaptability.

IN CLOSING:

Let me state that not everyone struggles with this issue the same way. For some, they are minor; for others, they can be more severe. Only you can be the judge of that. As always, seek professional help if needed. For quite some time, I struggled with some of the choices I made or the responses I gave. I knew they were not always in line with who I thought I was and what I believed in. I can tell you from personal experience that no one is perfect. We call all improve. We can all become better individuals, have a more fulfilling life, and help fulfill the lives of those we care about, especially our children. It was life-changing when I finally looked at myself many years ago. My job as a firefighter and paramedic contributed significantly to my outlook on myself and my life. Mainly because in that profession, you learn quickly that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one, and you must make the most of each day.

Understanding yourself is a lifelong process, marked by curiosity, trial and error, and an openness to change. As you dive deeper into yourself, you'll unlock a treasure of insights that enhance your quality of life. Cultivating self-awareness, staying attuned to your emotions, understanding your core values, and recognizing your behavioral patterns are essential steps in this journey. Ultimately, the more you understand yourself, the more empowered you become to navigate the complexities of life with authenticity and purpose.
